Music in the Mountains: It's not just a song and dance in these here hills!

Horseshoe Bend's own Music in the Mountains Show features a variety of music sure to appeal to all tastes, it's something for everyone! Appearing for the first time on the MITM stage at the April 21 was Dr. Kristi Sutton of Little Rock, Arkansas who sang Don't Be Cruel, and Wynonna Judd's Love Can Build A Bridge. Dr. Sutton is formerly of Salem and specializes in Internal Medicine at Mercy St. Joseph's Clinic, Hot Springs.
Regular guest Amy Clemmons Brown of Sherwood, who entertained with Buck Ownes' Loves Gonna Live Here Again, Jeanie Pruitt's Satin Sheets, and an Ernest Tubb song. Brown, who, as the daughter of MTIM Emcee Melodie Clemmons grew up in show business, enjoys singing the country classics as well as current chart songs.
During the second half, The Arnold Family Bluegrass Band sang several old-timey favorites. Noel, Pansy and Tim Arnold are well-known bluegrass musicians from Evening Shade. The group features Noel on fiddle, Pansy on upright bass, and Tim on guitar. Wyman Lee rounded out the second half with several crowd-pleasing favorites. Also appearing were local favorites Harold Cummins of Horseshoe Bend, Izard County Judge David Sherrell of Oxford, Darrell Brown of Sherwood, and Ed Luedke of Violet Hill. Of course, the multi-talented Hwy 289 Band was onstage with their own resident "Doc" - Dr. Ron Yow on drums; Chuck McNeight on bass; Bob McCarty on lead, and Melodie Clemmons on keyboard. The band kept toes tapping and hands clapping with everything from Patsy Cline to the Beatles.
Marty McKnight had the grill fired up with the burgers sizzling and Mayor Bob Barnes was at the helm of the corn popping machine. A variety of concessions were also available from volunteers Tina Barnes and Jackie Kizer while Cheryl Yow and Debbi McNeight manned (or rather womaned) the 50/50 raffle table.
Chuck McNeight announced that the group is selling reserved theatre seats as a fundraiser to install much-needed central air in the historic building. Seats are available for $50 or $100 each and will be reserved for the duration of the Music in the Mountains' current lease. It was also announced that FNBC is the Music in the Mountains new corporate sponsor for 2012.
Melodie Clemmons will be Emcee at the gazebo in Garden Park at Horseshoe Bend's annual Dogwood Days Festival, Saturday, May 12.
Over the past five years, the Horseshoe Bend Theatre and Music in the Mountains gang have hosted a variety of acts including musicians, singers, dancers, comedians, and combinations in nearly every genre. Included are acts from as far away as Texas, Missouri and Tennessee. Most recently, American Idol contestant Lauren Gray appeared. Heck, Lou Lou Roman of Hee Haw fame has even stopped by to say hi and sing a song or two! The next Music in the Mountains Show will feature popular vocalist Penny Wolfe of Melbourne. Also featured will be twelve-year-old Bailey McBryde of Evening Shade who will perform songs from the Highland Theatre's current production of Annie, in which she stars this season. Bailey is the daughter of Alicia and Clint McBryde who own and operate Life Strides Therapy. Life Strides offers hippotherapy and services to physically and developmentally challenged children and is located on Hwy. 62/412 between Ash Flat and Evening Shade. Of course, the Hwy. 289 Band will be there, along with all of the regular favorites!
Showtime is 6 p.m., the third Saturday of each month. Admission is by donation.
